At single anchor in Trincomalee Harbour. Wind SW force 2 to 5 with broken cloud. Barometer 29.89 inches rising to 29.97 at noon and remaining steady until midnight. Temperature at noon 88F. 0600. Received 116 lbs of fresh beef and 58 lbs of vegetables plus 238 lbs of bread. Draught 14 feet 6 inches forward. 16 feet. Aft. 0600. Shortened in. Lit fires in cutter.0700. Weighed stream anchor. 0730. Took Prize firing target and cutter in tow.  Weighed and proceeded as requisite for Back Bay.

  1. Lowered steam cutter. 1040. Slipped target and moored it in 3 fathoms. 1100. Laid down buoys for prize firing. Prize firing in the Navy is, and must essentially be, a competition between guns of the same nature in individual ships – Hansard. Noon. Wind SW force 3 with smooth sea. 1230. Exercised General Quarters. Ran torpedoes. Firing cannon tube. 1500. Lost by accident 1 hand lead and 12 fathoms of line. 1700. Finished running torpedoes – 6 runs. Moored target head and stern. Proceeded as requisite to anchor in Back Bay. 1745. Came to with 3 shackles. Anchor bearings. Flag staff S26E. Lighthouse S51E. Paid monthly money to Ship’s Company. Issued soap and tobacco. Coal expended 10 tons 16 cwt. Number on sick list 3.
