Temperature at noon. 79F. 0400. Steam up in cutter. Received 118 lbs of fresh beef and 56 lbs of vegetables plus 163 lbs of bread. 0800. Port watch painting ship. Starboard watch refitting boats gear and as requisite. 1030. Tested lifebuoys – found correct. 1300. Employed painting ship and getting up gun cotton for survey. Ships of the Squadron firing minute guns it being the day of the funeral of His Late Royal Highness the Duke of Clarence and Avondale. 1642. Commenced firing of minute guns. 1711. Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (Albert Victor Christian Edward; 8 January 1864 – 14 January 1892), was the eldest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) and grandson of the reigning British monarch, Queen Victoria. From the time of his birth, he was second in the line of succession to the British throne, but never became king because he died before his father and grandmother.
