Temperature 49F rising to 61F at 1600 before falling to 58F at midnight. Draught of water forward 14 feet. Aft 15 feet 6 inches. 0500. Lit fires and raised steam in all boilers. 0700 received270 lbs of fresh beef and120 lbs of vegetables. 0830. HMS Caster sailed. 0900. Mustered by Divisions. Read prayers. 1100. Hauled off mole and proceeded out of harbour under steam. 1300. Proceeded on 6 hour speed trial at 14 knots. Observed Channel Squadron on port bow.1430. Passed a French gunboat steaming to the westward.  Employed as requisite. 1600. Mustered at Quarters. Issued clean hammocks. Exercised Man and Dress Ship. 1742Steam trial ended. 1815. Let steam die out in 4th boiler. Midnight. Steaming at 80 revolutions 9.5 knots.
