At anchor off Zanzibar. Wind Calm force 1 with broken cloud and showers.  Barometer 30.12 inches rising to 30.20 at 0800 before falling to30.10 at 1600 and finishing at 30.10 inches at midnight. Temperature at noon. 84F. 0015. Lit fires and raised steam in 2nd boiler. 0450 Communicated with HMS Turquoise proceeding into harbour. 0600. Torpedo guns crews employed testing Whitehead torpedoes. 0730. Steam up in boiler. 0830. Weighed. Course and speed as requisite for torpedo practice. Wind ENE force 2. 0930. Exercised running Whitehead torpedoes while under way. 1100. Steaming as requisite.1140. Came to in 9 fathoms. Noon. Wind NE force 2. 1400. Weighed. Running torpedoes as in forenoon and swinging ship for adjustment of compass.1600. Proceeded for harbour. 1640. Stopped and came to in 15 fathoms and veered to 2 ½ shackles. Let fires burn out in one boiler. Anchorage bearings Ras Shangani. S25E. Clock tower S83E magnetic. Jolly Boat and Whaler returned from cruising.  1650. German cruiser Schwalbe arrived. Coal expended 4 tons 7 cwt. Number on sick list 14.
