At anchor in Lamu harbour. Wind south force 3 to 5 with broken cloud. Barometer 30.16 inches rising to 20.18 at noon then falling to 30.09 inches at 1600 before rising to 30.11 inches at midnight. Temperature at noon 87F. 0900. Employed cleaning ship throughout. 1000.  Received 120 lbs of fresh beef and 60 lbs of vegetables. 1300. Detached cutter and dinghy to carry out blockade duties. 1330. Weighed and proceeded out of harbour. Course as requisite at 70 revolutions – 2 to 5 knots. Cleaning ship. 1530.  Kanyika island abeam. Shaped to SW by S at 4.2 knots. Wind SW force 5 with passing showers and a considerable sea. 1700. Mustered at Quarters.1810. Increased to 75 revolutions – 7 knots. Coal expended 11 tons 4 cwt. Number on sick list 6.
