At sea. Lamu to Zanzibar. Course SW by S ½ S at 5 knots. Wind south force 3 to 5.  Overcast, squally with showers. Barometer 30.08 inches rising to 30.11 at noon before falling to 30.06 at 1600 before rising to 30.11 inches at midnight. Temperature at noon 88F. 0400. Lost overboard by accident one 6 inch breech loading tampion. 0600. Altered course to S by W ½ W at 8 knots. And proceeded at full speed. 0700. Observed Zambezi Island ahead. 0815. Exercised at General Quarters firing at target. 0900 Proceeded SW ¼ W. Employed as requisite. 6th guns crew at drill. Observed German Man-of –War in Khatami (?) Harbour. 1115. Stopped and took transport “Woodcock” in tow.  1130. Proceeded to Zanzibar. Position at noon. 6.0S 39.10E. 1330. Stopped “Woodcock”. 1335 Stopped and came to in Zambezi with sandy bottom in 10 fathoms and veered to 2 ½ shackles. Let fires die out. Found here HMS Boadicea (Flag) RAINDEER and MARINER. French sloop BOURET. 1715. Mustered at Quarters.  Anchorage bearings Consuls flag staff S 42E. Church tower S27E magnetic. Expended at target practice 24 x 6 inch Breech loading 24lbs cartridges. 24 x 6 inch breech loading shot pallisters. During month 1000 cartridge tubes. 3 x steel cartridge filled 7 pounder 12 oz. Coal expended 9 tons 14 cwt. Number on sick list 10.
