Wind WSW force 2 to 3 changing to South-westerly force 1 to 2. Temperature 84F.

0800. Received new Bowsprit.

0830. In Bowsprit.  Down derrick. Launched pinnace and cutter.

PM Employed gammoning Bowsprit. Seven or eight turns of a rope lashing passed alternatively over the Bowsprit and through the large hole in the cut-water the better to support the stays of the foremast, after all the turns are drawn as firm as possible  the two opposite are braced together under the bowsprit by a frapping. It was essence of a Seaman’s ability and only forecastle men under the Boatswain executed it. Now days galvanised chains are used. Carpenters plaining spare Topmast. Blacksmith employed about the nippers.
