This photograph, taken in1888 by an unknown photographer, shows work in progress on the 330 ft long Government graving dock, situated on the north-east corner of the half-tidal basin of the Calcutta Docks. A graving dock, otherwise known as a dry dock, is enclosed by gates and pumped dry to allow repairs to be carried out on a ship’s hull.
