During Warship Week in February 1942, Esher raised £1,192,211, which helped to build a warship, ‘HMS Cossack’. This was done by the public throwing money in to a rubber type float in a pool. (There was sufficient money left over to buy a submarine as well).

Remarks: He joined the RN on 2 October 1951 and retired 32 years later in June 1983 as a Chief Petty Officer, a rate he had held since 1964.
Born and bred in Kirkcaldy, Fife, he was a Chatham Rating. As well as Cossack, his other sea drafts included Swiftsure, Diamond, Bramble, Crossbow, Palliser and his last sea-going draft, HMS Intrepid. His last 10 years in the Navy were spent at HMS Cochrane where he was the Chief Petty Officer for the Sea Cadets for Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland. A recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal. Died 15 February 2021
