During Warship Week in February 1942, Esher raised £1,192,211, which helped to build a warship, ‘HMS Cossack’. This was done by the public throwing money in to a rubber type float in a pool. (There was sufficient money left over to buy a submarine as well).

Remarks: Lt Alan (Sugar) Tate RN Rtd crossed the bar on Dec 23rd 2021.  From Ken Satterthwaite  - Sugar & I go back to 1956 when we joined the Barrack Guard In HMS Victory (Nelson) we became run ashore oppo’s and firm friends, incidentally  he also met his wife then, Patricia, who was a WRN in RNB.  We were both AB’s at the time and decided to volunteer for HMS Comus in the Far East which we joined in early 57 where we both became PO’s Messmen, also the late Jock Duthie was our run ashore mate. We were transferred to HMS Cossack and both changed jobs, both challenging the board for Leading hand whilst on her. When we left we went our separate ways, but it was a friendship which spanned time.   He qualified GI in early 60’s, a couple of years before me, then the next I heard he had gone for commission.  I later heard that in the late 70’s early 80’s he was medically discharged with the gunner problem, ‘Gunners Ear’ and took up a management job with RNLI.  I went to see him again when we had both retired from our civilian jobs at his home in Poole. Unfortunately I was not able to see him again until about 3-4 years ago when he had moved with his wife into a flat complex in Wimborne as he was now suffering with Alzheimer’s. Though we have had the odd  telephone conversation and swapped Christmas cards over the years.
