Saluted Sultan with 21 guns and (?) in chief with 13 guns. 1130. Arrived German cruiser Schwalbe. 1150. German cruiser Schwalbe sailed. PM. Paid monthly money to Ships Company. Coaling ship. 1415. HS corvette Sateafuise (?) sailed.

Noon Finished coaling having received 284 tons. PM. Cleaning and provisioning ship. 1600. Washed clothes. Issued soap to Ship’s company. 1845 German frigate LEIPSIC (Flag) arrived. (Leipsic is a former English spelling for the German city of Leipzig.) Coal expended 6 cwt. – 300 tons 3cwt remained. Number on sick list 7.

Temperature at noon 81F. 0800. Steam in cutter. 0930 Mustered by Divisions and read prayers. Employed as requisite. Training party firing shell practice. Divers down examining valves. PM. As in Forenoon. Received 155 lbs of fresh beef.
Expended. 48 x steel case cartridges for 7 pounder 12oz. 44 x empty shell cartridges 7 pounder.. 2 x filled shell cartridge for 7 po8nder. 1 x shrapnel shell for 7 pounder. 1 x shot case for 7 pounder. 75 x tubes quill friction. 600 x cartridges for .45 inch M. G. Nordenfelt. 3 x 15 inch fuses.

Stopped and came to with sandy bottom in 10 fathoms and veered to 1 1/3 shackles. 5th and 6t guns crews and training party at gun drill. 1700. Communicated with HMS Turquoise boats. 1710 Weighed and proceeded out of harbour. 1815 Shaped course to S ½ W at 45 revolutions – 4 knots. Wind SW force 2 to 3. Coal expended 11 tons 5 cwt. Lanced away and lost overboard 100 fathoms of log line and ships log. 2200. Passed the Zanzibar anchorage and communicated by signal with HMS Agamemnon. Working engines as requisite. North end Pangani Island S47E magnetic. Noon. Found here five Portuguese Man –of- Wars. Draught of water forward 13 feet. Aft 15 feet 3 inches. 1350 BODICEA saluted Portuguese Flag – 11 guns. 1445 Portuguese Flagship saluted with 13 guns. Cleaning ship and as requisite .1715. Mustered at Quarters. BODICEA saluted Portuguese Admiral with 19 guns. Coal expended 15 tons 2cwt. Number on sick list 13.
