Came to in Kilifi harbour with sandy bottom in 13 ½ fathoms and veered to 1 ½ shackles. Steam cutter and gig returned. 0600. Sent cutter and gig to cruise harbour entrance. 0635 Weighed and proceeded out of harbour. 0730. Shaped course to NE by E ½ E at 40 revolutions – 3 knots. 0800 wind NE force 1. 0900. Increased to 50 revolutions – 4.5 knots. 1000. T boat to board two dhows. Working engines as requisite. Mixed transport WOODCOCK passed to starboard. 1125 Proceeded NE by E ½ E at 50 revolutions – 2.5 knots. Employed as requisite. 1330. Altered course to north. 1430. Stopped – out target. Fired Nordinfelt gun from bridge and travelling carriage; and cannon tube from B.L. (Breech Loading) gun.

Read prayers. 1015 communicated by boat with TORQUOISE. 1120 Proceeded for Kilifi at 40 revolutions. – 5 knots. Position at noon 3.45S 39.55E. Kilifi Pillars bearing N47W 6 nautical miles. 1345 Stopped and came to in Kilifi Harbour with broken bottom in 15 fathoms. Employed as requisite. Steam cutter and gig returned. 1545. Observed HMS Mariner. 1600 Wind SE force 3. 1715. Weighed and proceeded out of harbour. 1845 shaped to S by W. 1905. Proceeding at 60 revolutions – 6.2 knots. Lost overboard by accident by boats when cruising one scabbard, sword bayonet and frog. 2100. Reduced to 56 revolutions – 5.5 knots. 0945 Observed HMS Turquoise. 2230. Communicated with HMS Turquoise. 2330. Altered course to SW by S ½ S. Coal expended 9 tons 7 cwt. Number on sick list 8.
