This is the story of the second ship to bear the name HMS Cossack.

Originally ordered by Russia for the Black Sea Fleet in December 1852 at a cost of 290,000 silver roubles, the ship was sold to the Hamburg trading house of Henry Mersk & Co. when relations between Britain and Russia deteriorated, as Russia feared possible confiscation.

The original contract price for the vessel, then named Witjas (Cossack), was £46,198, including £16,750 for machinery. The Admiralty subsequently paid the contractors £9,591 to complete the contract (of which £4,187 was for machinery), plus £751 for tonnage exceeding the specification and £2,206 for modifications for His Majesty’s service. The ship remained in service until 1875.

Moored in Simons Bay South Africa. Wind force 1.

0915 Coal lighter came alongside. Coaled ship. Issued fishing gear to ship’s company.

PM Carried on coaling followed by scrubbing and washing decks.

17 April 1869

Wind force 1 increasing to 7. Cleaned ship throughout and  watered ship from tank.

1140 loosed sails PM Received 32 tons of water.

1330 Down Top gallant yards. Unbent sails and cleaned booms. Carpenters and Blacksmiths on shore.

1715 Mustered at quarters.

18 April 1869

Broken cloud with wind varying from 1 to 7. 100 Mustered by Divisions and performed ?Divine Service.

PM Gave special and privilege leave to both watches.

1720 down Top gallant masts and up boats.

19 April 1869

Employed setting up Topmast rigging. Caulkers from shore caulking upper deck.

Wind southerly force 2/3. Broken cloud . Temperature 66 F. Rattling down rigging and refitting. Upper deck still being caulked.

21 April 1869

No wind with broken cloud cover. Upper deck still being caulked. Commodore inspected “Racoon” (Sailing boat) .  Ship’s company carried out rattling and blacking. Down rigging and painting the outside of the ship.

PM Gave general leave to Port watch. Received powder and shell. Upper deck still being caulked.

22 April 1869

Wind from SSE Force 0 increasing to 7. Barometer dropping from 30.24 to 30.10 inches. Cleared holds.  Upper deck still being caulked.

1130 Sailed “Racoon”.

Pm Re-stowed ballast.

23 April 1869

Wind SSE Force 4 / 5. Caulking of Upper deck still being carried out. Cleaning and stowing holds.

0600 Up Top gallant masts. Cleaned holds. Gave 48 hour shore leave to Starboard Watch. Provisioned ship.

1130. Arrived H.M.G Boat “Hornet”.

PM As per the Forenoon.

1500 Dutch Frigate sailed. Finished provisioning. Stored slop and Bread Rooms.

27 April 1869

Wind SSW switching to SSE Force 1 gradually increasing to 5. Barometer increasing to 30.36 inches.

0200 “Petrel” arrived. Rove screw purchase. Raised screw and cleaned it. Cleaned masts, yards and booms. Fitted foretails.

PM as forenoon followed by lowering of the screw.

28 April 1869

Wind Se Force 6/7 decreasing to 3/4. Temperature 69F.

0945 English steamer “Tynmouth” arrived. Repaired sails.

PM as the forenoon plus scraping Trysail mast. 1600 Watch made up sails for bending.

29 April 1869

Wind SE Force 2/3.Broken cloud.

0800 Bent sails on. Sent boom boats away armed firing shot and shell at dock, held Court of Inquiry.

Pm Furled sails and crossed Top gallant yards.

1715 Mustered at Quarters.

30 April 1869

Wind calm, broken cloud with temperature of 72 F.

0900 Read prayers. Exercised at General Quarters. Set up top Gallant rigging.

1130 In boom boats. Sailmakers altering boats sails.

1715 Mustered at quarters and then rove messenger in copper punt.

1750 HMS “Octavia” arrived and anchored.

Moored in Simon s Bay with Cape of Good Hope 6 miles away. Wind SSW Force 1.

0900 HMS Hornet sailed. Preparing for sea.

1000 Weighed and proceeded under steam. 1100. In company with HMS Serpent at 7 knots. 1

200 Shaping course to the South.

1400 Set Fore and aft sails. Fitted chaffing gear.

1450 Shortened sail.

1500 Pointed yards to wind.

1600. Four sails in sight. Lost sight of HMS Hornet NW by W.

1700 extreme of land bearing E by S ¼ S Midnight. One sail in sight.

Hidden Gems

The Island of Kotka was attacked in 1855, but the garrison had already departed: barracks, stores and magazines etc were destroyed and the squadron left, leaving COSSACK in charge of the Island.
