This is the story of the second ship to bear the name HMS Cossack.

Originally ordered by Russia for the Black Sea Fleet in December 1852 at a cost of 290,000 silver roubles, the ship was sold to the Hamburg trading house of Henry Mersk & Co. when relations between Britain and Russia deteriorated, as Russia feared possible confiscation.

The original contract price for the vessel, then named Witjas (Cossack), was £46,198, including £16,750 for machinery. The Admiralty subsequently paid the contractors £9,591 to complete the contract (of which £4,187 was for machinery), plus £751 for tonnage exceeding the specification and £2,206 for modifications for His Majesty’s service. The ship remained in service until 1875.

1400. Exchanged colours with an English ship standing to westward.

Under steam and sail. Swell from SW. made sail to single reefed Topsail and reefed Courses. Kept away to the northward.

1515 Out reefs fo Topsails. Set Top gallant sails.

2100 Stopped steaming. Wind SW force 5.

0800. Unbent Mainsail for repairs. Exercised at General Quarters. Discharged invalids to P &O steamer MOOLTAN.

1800. MOOLTAN sails.

13 May 1871

Wind NE force 1 to 3 becoming SSE force 3 then east force 2.

Employed cleaning ship throughout. East India Company steamer ORIENTAL  arrived from coast and Rangoon. Mended furl of sails.

14 May 1871

Wind south force 1 increasing to 2.

Sunday. Mustered by Divisions and performed Divine Service. Sent Roman Catholics to Chapel. Gave special leave to both watches.

15 May 1871

Wind NNE force 5 to 7 becoming southerly force 2. Barometer 29.80 inches. Maximum temperature 90F.

Crossed Royal yard, loosed sails. Employed cleaning Bread Room.

1315 Furled sails. Down Royal yards. Restowed Bread Room .

1700 Received money for Trincomalee Dockyard.

Remarks

 On our way here this time the ship was comparatively still the ground swell being very small allowing the surf boats to land with ease – ships boats of course go to the pier steps on the lee side. There were only about eight European merchant vessels here with several country vessels. The Time Ball at Madras that is spoken about in the Sailing Directions was not seen by us from the ship. A gun is fired from the Fort of St George at 2000 Mean Time. The weather here was totally cool; the SW wind blowing forth, the sea breeze setting in about noon and lasting till about 0700

16 May 1871

1430. Left Madras Roads. Wind NE force 1 to 2 becoming SE force 2 to 3. Under steam and sail.

0530 French mail steamer MENAIN arrived. Employed pointing ropes and as requisite.

1120 Received 4000 lbs of bread from commissariat employed storing the bread. Noon. Preparing for sea.

1520 Weighed and proceeded under steam.

1600 Shaped course S by E ½ E. POINTED YARDS TO THE WIND. 1800 Madras light House NNW.

2000 Lost sight of madras light.

2200. Set fore and aft sails. Wind SSW force 3 to 4..

17 May 1871

Latitude 11.48N. Longitude 80.57E. Wind south westerly force 4 becoming SSW force 2.  Under steam and sail Foul Point Ceylon S6E 196 nautical miles. Mustered at Quarters. Set foresail. Wind SW.

1035 Set topsails and main sail. Down top gallant yards.

1215. Altered course to S ½ E. Light breeze hauled off land shore to SSW and south. Shortened and furled sails

1020. Set fore and aft sails. Wind SW by S.

2200. Observed a very brilliant  meteor to the north east

18 May 1871

Under steam and sail. Exercised at General and Fire Quarters. Watch employed refitting upper yards.

1212. Altered course to S ¼ W. Set Foresail.

Remarks

 We had fine weather and strong SW wind causing heavy sea. Sea breeze setting in during the afternoon. We had a strong  northerly current for the first two days. On the morning of the 19th we were about abreast of Palk Straits the wind blew very strong from the SW with a heavy sea; the ship in consequence making less than 3 knots an hour.

20 May 1871

At single anchor of Trincomalee Dockyard. Wind SW force 3 decreasing to 2.

Sent party to dockyard. Down lower and topsail yards for refitting. Hauled first cutter up on slip.

1600. Up both jack and mizzen topsail yards.

21 May 1871

Wind SW force 3 to 4. Barometer 29.94 inches.

Up lower and topsail yards. Sent roman Catholics to chapel. Mustered by Open List. Performed Divine service. Gave special Leave to both watches and privilege leave to starboard watch.. hauled up launch on boat slip.

22 May 1871

Wind SW force 4 decreasing to 3. Maximum temperature 91F.

Employed refitting and rattling down rigging. Hauled up second cutter.

1600. Coal lighter came alongside.

1745. Pointed top gallant masts.

23 May 1871

Wind SW force 3 to 5 decreasing to 2.

Coaling ship. Dockyard party on shore.

1050. HMS COLUMBINE arrived from Socotra off which her main yard went in two and came on here with it fished.

2030. Received 176 tons of coal.

24 May 1871

Wind SW force 3 decreasing to 2. Barometer 30.00 inches.

Party at dockyard repairing sails and making wind sails. Repairing boats..

0800 Dressed ship in honour of the anniversary of HM birthday. Cleaning ship throughout.

1200 Fired a Royal Salute. Scrubbed masts and booms.

Hidden Gems

The Island of Kotka was attacked in 1855, but the garrison had already departed: barracks, stores and magazines etc were destroyed and the squadron left, leaving COSSACK in charge of the Island.
