This is the story of the second ship to bear the name HMS Cossack.

Originally ordered by Russia for the Black Sea Fleet in December 1852 at a cost of 290,000 silver roubles, the ship was sold to the Hamburg trading house of Henry Mersk & Co. when relations between Britain and Russia deteriorated, as Russia feared possible confiscation.

The original contract price for the vessel, then named Witjas (Cossack), was £46,198, including £16,750 for machinery. The Admiralty subsequently paid the contractors £9,591 to complete the contract (of which £4,187 was for machinery), plus £751 for tonnage exceeding the specification and £2,206 for modifications for His Majesty’s service. The ship remained in service until 1875.

Moored off Coopers Island. Wind north westerly force 1.

AM. Employed cleaning ship. Watering from tank – received 14 tons.

PM. Employed as required. Hauled up pinnace and second gig on shore for painting. Mustered at Quarters. Received 18 ½ tons of water.

14 August 1870

Wind SE force 1. Barometer 30.26 inches. Maximum temperature 75F.

AM. Mustered by Divisions and performed Divine Service.

PM. Gave special leave. 1715 Mustered at Quarters. Liberty men returned.

15 August 1870

Calm and light airs. Barometer steady.

0745 Mooring lighter came alongside.

1015. slipped from moorings and towed to dockyard by a tug.. Employed warping ship into dock..

PM. Employed scrubbing ships bottom.. Artificers making good defects. Mustered at Quarters. Raised propeller.

1430 Read Warrant for imprisonment with hard labour of Able Seaman W. Roddan, Able Seaman Peter Ingram and Ordinary JNO Cane. Mustered at Quarters. Gave special leave. Mustered by the Open List.

17 August 1870

Wind NE calm increasing to force 3.

0745. Let water in to dock.

0910 Mustered at Quarters. Artificers making good small defects.

PM. Assistant Harbour Master came onboard. Transported ship out of dock. Proceeded to Navy moorings in tow of tug.

1550. Took in moorings. Washed clothes.

18 August 1870

Wind SSE force 1 to 2 increasing to 4 later..

AM. Caulkers from dockyard caulking upper deck. Scrubbing masts and yards.. Gave leave to starboard watch.

PM Caulking ship. Artificers making good small defects. Watch as required. Starboard watch returned from leave.

19 August 1870

Wind SE force 1 to 2. Barometer dropping from 30.26 inches to 30.17 inches at noon..

AM Gave general leave to starboard watch. Caulkers from shore caulking upper deck. Employed painting masts and yards.. Artificers making good small defects.

PM. Caulking as in the forenoon. Read Warrant for the reduction  of Jno Ward and Private Ed Wilmot RMDLI to second class and 30 days imprisonment.  Painting spars.

1835. Received 31 tons of water. Starboard watch returned from leave.

20 August 1870

AM Cleaning ship. Gave general leave to port watch.

PM. Cleaning ship. Painting masts. 1935 Port watch returned from leave.

21 August 1870

0930. Mustered by Divisions. 1020 Performed Divine Service.

22 August 1870

0700. Gave general leave to port watch.. Caulkers from shore caulking outside of ship. Watch employed fitting upper yards., painting masts and yards. Sailmakers repairing Mainsail. Found main top gallant mast had sprung. It was surveyed and condemned..

PM. Employed as in the forenoon. Mustered at Quarters. Port watch returned form leave.

23 August 1870

Wind SSE force 2 to 4 decreasing to 2 later. Barometer rising to 30.37 inches.

AM. Watch employed refitting and painting upper yards. Caulkers from shore caulking outside of ship. Sailmakers repairing mainsail.. Artificers making good small defects..

PM. Caulking and scraping ship’s sides.

1400. Let go life belt for trial and found to all correct.. Scrubbed and washed clothes.

24 August 1870

Wind South easterly force 1 to 2 increasing to 3. Barometer rising to 30.38 inches before falling.

AM. Party on shore loading lighter with powder and shell. Employed receiving shell and puttying ships outside.

PM. Employed receiving shell and powder. Storing powder magazine and shell room. Sailmakers repairing Foresail. Artificers making good small defects. Mustered at Quarters.

25 August 1870

Wind southerly force 1 to 6 decreasing to 1 to 3 later.

0930. Mustered by Divisions. Read prayers. Watch employed in un-storing and cleaning booms. Sailmakers repairing Foresail. Artificers making good defects.

26 August 1870

Hidden Gems

The Island of Kotka was attacked in 1855, but the garrison had already departed: barracks, stores and magazines etc were destroyed and the squadron left, leaving COSSACK in charge of the Island.
