This is the story of the second ship to bear the name HMS Cossack.

Originally ordered by Russia for the Black Sea Fleet in December 1852 at a cost of 290,000 silver roubles, the ship was sold to the Hamburg trading house of Henry Mersk & Co. when relations between Britain and Russia deteriorated, as Russia feared possible confiscation.

The original contract price for the vessel, then named Witjas (Cossack), was £46,198, including £16,750 for machinery. The Admiralty subsequently paid the contractors £9,591 to complete the contract (of which £4,187 was for machinery), plus £751 for tonnage exceeding the specification and £2,206 for modifications for His Majesty’s service. The ship remained in service until 1875.

Wind north westerly force 1 to 2. Temperature at noon 84F with barometer falling to 29.77 inches.

AM. Mustered by Divisions and performed Divine Service.

PM Gave General leave to both watches.

28 March 1870

Wind variable in direction force 1 to 2. Temperature at noon 86F. Barometer continues to drop to 29.96 inches.

0915 Mustered at Quarters. Second company of small arms men at drill. Pistolmen firing at target.

PM Training party and acting seaman gunners at rifle drill. Employed refitting gun gear. Gave general leave to Port watch, Scrubbed and washed clothes.

29 March 1870

Wind westerly force 1 to 2. Temperature at noon 82F. Barometer 29.97 inches.

0715 Veered to 5 shackles to allow AMOURIQUE to weigh.

0735. AMOURIQUE sailed. Saluted French Commodore with 11 guns which were returned.. Hove back to mooring swivel.

PM Fired a time gun. Employed refitting clothes lines, pointing ropes and gripes. Artificers making good small defects.

30 March 1870

Wind calm increasing to force 2 from the NNW. Noon temperature 84F.  Barometer dropping to 29.93 inches.

0900 Port watch returned from leave. Employed refitting  new hammocks, clothes etc.

1110. Up ships screw and lowered again.

PM Exercised at General quarters. Watch employed  repairing foresail and cleaning nettings. Gave general leave to starboard watch. 1

750 down top gallant masts.

31 March 1870

Wind north westerly. Force 1 to 3. Noon temperature 86F. barometer 29.96 inches.

AM Watch employed rigging Top gallant funnels  and refitting Foresail.

1115. Up Top gallant masts.

PM making and mending clothes. Carpenters making lockers in after nettings. Scrubbed and washed clothes.

01 April 1870

Wind force 1 to 3 north westerly. Temperature at noon 85F. Barometer 29.90 inches.

AM Employed restoring sail room. Carpenters and artificers altering hammock nettings. Part of watch at rifle drill.

PM. Sent boys away sailing in pinnace for exercise..  Let go life buoy

1720 Mustered at Quarters. Bent sails. Crossed Top gallant yards. and all correct.

02 April 1870

Wind northerly force 1 to 2. Temperature at noon 84F. Barometer steady.

AM Watering ship from launch. Employed cleaning ship throughout. PM As required.

1645 Mustered at Quarters. Issued clean hammocks.

03 April 1870

Wind North westerly force 1 to 2. Temperature at noon 86F.

AM. Through overboard 6lbs of bad beef. Received 880lbs of sugar.

1000. Mustered by Divisions for Divine Service.

PM Gave special leave to both watches.

04 April 1870

AM. Watering ship by launch. Employed cleaning tiers and after sail tiers and repositioning the same.

05 April 1870

Wind north westerly to WNW force 2 increasing to 4. Temperature at noon 83F. Barometer 30.03 inches.. 045. HMS at cutlass drill. Training party at rifle drill. Watch employed as required. Carpenters making lockers.

06 April 1870

Wind north westerly force 2 to 3. Barometer rising from 29.93 inches to 29.98 inches before falling to 29.90 inches. Crossed yards and loosed sails.

0915 Exercised at General Quarters. Watch employed stropping blocks. Carpenters making lockers. Received stores from NYMPH. Sailmakers altering hatchway hood..

PM Employed stropping blocks and striking down stores. Pinnace and gig laying down buoys.

07 April 1870

Wind north westerly calm to force 1. Barometer steady. Maximum temperature 84F.

AM. Employed cleaning after hold for survey.. Employed in striking down provisions and restoring main hold.

PM Employed as in forenoon. Carpenters making lockers. Scrubbed and washed clothes.

08 April 1870

Wind calm with barometer rising to 29.95 inches. Broken cloud.

0755 Loosed sails. Employed getting up soap and tobacco. Third class of the watch at cutlass drill. Carpenters about the lockers.

PM. Exercised second company of small arms men. Discharged Mr Chalmers. Sub Lt. to NYMPH. Joined Mr Reynard – acting Sub Lt. received 54,000 Rupees.

1440 Came to in 7 fathoms with sandy bottom. Veered to 3 ½ shackles…

11 April 1870

Wind westerly force 2 to 4 with the barometer dropping to 29.96 inches before rising to 30.05 inches. Moored in Curieuse Bay (Curieuse Island is a small granitic island 1.13 sq mi (2.9 km2) in the Seychelles close to the north coast of the island of Praslin. )

AM. Mustered at Quarters. Prayers. Artificers making good small defects. Training party at gun drill. Employed repairing Mizzen topsail.

PM. Artificers as in the forenoon. Training party of both watches at gun drill.. Watch and sailmakers …

0715. Weighed under steam and proceeded out of Curieuse Bay under charge of pilot.

0948. Set Foresail. Training party at cutlass drill. 18lbs of condemned preserved beef thrown overboard.

Hidden Gems

The Island of Kotka was attacked in 1855, but the garrison had already departed: barracks, stores and magazines etc were destroyed and the squadron left, leaving COSSACK in charge of the Island.
